A Tollhouse exterior in Emerald Rain Refresh

Tollhouse sits in the Sierra Nevada foothills above the valley floor. Summers still hit the 90s, the sun is relentless, and when it does rain, it rinses a season of dust off everything — including a poorly prepped paint job.

For this house we specified Sherwin-Williams Emerald Rain Refresh, an exterior acrylic with a self-cleaning claim: dirt and pollen tend to rinse rather than bake into the film. That matters on a foothill lot more than a marketing bullet.

What we actually did to the wall

We walked the elevations for peeling, cracks, and mildew, then washed. Loose film came off. Cracks were filled. Windows, doors, decks, and planting were masked. Where the siding needed a bonding primer, it got one — self-priming paint is not a license to skip chemistry on chalky walls.

How it went on

Medium-nap rollers on the siding, spray on the big fields, brushes on the white trim and rails. Two coats, with dry time that respected the product and the afternoon heat — not a race to get off the site.

Why this product on this hill
